Sponsors of new Bika LIMS for water quality management -Bika Water - in production at the City's Richards Bay laboratory

City of uMhlathuze logoThe City

Administered by the municipality of the same name, the City of uMhlathuze encompasses the towns of Empangeni, Richards Bay, eSikhawini, Ngwelezane, Nseleni, Vulindlela and Felixton, as well as the rural areas under Amakhosi Dube, Mkhwanazi, Khoza, Mbuyazi and Zungu. Richards Bay is seen to be the industrial and tourism hub, with Empangeni as its commercial arm

The city is named after the river that meanders through the area linking the towns and traditional areas. Directly translated, Mhlathuze means `the jaw that cannot chew'

Known affectionately to seafarers as Rikkie's Vlei, the City of uMhlathuze lies low on the horizon, a shimmering green flatness that, unless you know it's there, you can be forgiven for passing without a second thought as you race north along the N2 towards game farms, fishing spots and diving destinations

Open Source in the lab

Lab manager Neeran Maharaj saya "We are in the fortunate position to actively participate in this development project and one of our primary goals is to see it implemented in many more Municipal labs, contributing to water quality management, an all too frequent news item given the effects of the rapid urbanization we are experiencing in South Africa”

“We were able to have the system tailored to our exact requirements and we'll continue to enhance and modify it as our needs evolve without vendor lock-in or rigid upgrade cycles”

“We are engaged in the ISO 17025 accreditation process and Bika Water will accelerate our qualification. We are considering sponsoring the development of an integrated accreditation module to automate procedures originating from the Quality Management functionality inherent to Bika Water"
