SASS is a non-profit organisation established in 1969, arising from a Spectroscopic Discussion Group which began five years earlier. In terms of it's constitution, "spectroscopy" is defined as all sciences relating to electro-magnetic and particle spectra
Members of the Society are active in both local and international conferences, and represented by two members at the meetings of National Delegates of Spectroscopists held at the biennial conferences of the Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale (CSI)
