The African Decade was proclaimed by the African Union for the period 1999-2009. One of the main goals of the Decade is to raise awareness about the situation of the estimated 80 million persons with disabilities living in Africa. The African Decade is a collaborative initiative involving the African Union, African governments, UN Agencies and other organizations working with disability and development

The mission of the Secretariat of the African Decade is to empower governments, Decade Steering Committees, Disabled People's Organisations and development organisations to work in partnership to include disability and persons with disabilities in policies and programmes in all sectors of society in Africa.
