Accreditation

SANAS · The South African National Accreditation System
SANAS is recognised by the South African Government as the single National Accreditation Body that gives formal recognition that Laboratories, Certification Bodies, Inspection Bodies, Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) test facilities are competent to carry out specific tasks. SANAS is responsible for the accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 in South Africa
Why Accreditation
The global trend is towards a free market with no economic trade barriers, allowing for free movement of goods and interchange of services. Such a situation can only be consummated when technical barriers to trade are also eliminated. For this to occur the trading countries must have confidence in the quality and environmental systems, personnel and product certification and inspection systems as well as the measurements and tests conducted by each other.

Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) links
Standard operating procedures (SOP)
Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are written procedures for a laboratories program. They define how to carry out protocol-specified activities. Most often they are written in a chronological listing of action steps
Westgard multirule QC
Multirule QC uses a combination of decision criteria, or control rules, to decide whether an analytical run is in-control or out-of-control. The well-known Westgard multirule QC procedure uses 5 different control rules to judge the acceptability of an analytical run.

Training within the Microbiology Laboratory
Article by dr Tim Sandle. Extract:"The training and assessment of staff working in a microbiology laboratory is of great importance, both to give confidence in the results produced by the laboratory and to satisfy regulatory inspectors. Guidance in developing a suitable training and assessment scheme is limited. There is a mass of published material relating to training in general, and there is a reasonable amount of published material related to training of staff in clean room behavior. There is little, however, devoted to the training and qualification of staff working in the microbiological laboratory itself."
